It is impractical and unnecessary to test for all possible contaminants. The test for total coliform bacteria is a good place to start. Your well water is considered safe to drink if it is absent of total coliform bacteria. Other specific contaminants such as lead, copper, nitrates, pesticides and herbicides may be of concern, and can be harmful to your health.
In addition to contaminants, a variety of less serious problems such as taste, color, odor and staining are water quality problems that you don’t have to live with. These water quality problems are not health concerns and are treatable. Aesthetic problems are easily detected — use your eyes, nose and taste buds — most of the nuisance problems are treatable.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does NOT regulate private drinking water wells, so you are responsible to make sure your water is safe for your family to drink. It is up to you to test your private well and keep your family safe. The EPA recommends testing your well water at least once a year. You’ll want to test for coliform bacteria and nitrates to ensure your water is safe.
